Ah, blatant marketing. It’s not something we’ve been doing much of lately, going for a more grass-roots vibe with our kickstarter, but as we’re finishing up week two on our little console, I think we need to kick it up a notch. So I’m editing a new video with me rambling a little, and I’m preparing a magazine-style press kit I can share with backers, enthusiasts, reporters and bloggers alike! Check the preview below. For those worried that we may not hit our funding goal, relax. Whatever the outcome of our campaign, we’ve done way too much work to just abandon the STARFORCE PI. The more work we put in, the more we’re convinced of its potential. First Week!

First of all, thanks to all our backers for seeing the potential and fun of our killer arcade console, seriously, you guys rock. We’ve been getting some amazing responses since the campaign went online, and news seems to be traveling quickly! We’ve been roaming some forums as well, getting some challenging questions and discussing what’s possible with our little system. So, if you have anything to add, questions, requests or if you want some more specifications on the systems, message us an we’ll get back to you asap, or even make it into a FAQ.

We’ve been getting a few questions on game support. We’re developing the emulation support with the following in mind: you download the software from us, install it on a microSD, pop it into the STARFORCE PI and you’re done! If we reach our EMU stretchgoal, you get this card bundled with your system – even easier! Now, if you want to add games, there are two options: you can have them already on the microSD, or you can have the games on a USB stick. Just stick it in an switch on your SFP. The games we’re allowed to distribute, we’ll make available on our website, but those that are under copyright are in a gray area: the developers don’t support them anymore but we’re not allowed to have them as ROMs. These games are generally easily found online though.

EmulationStation is actually targeted to the Raspberry Pi, and works great with the little card. The team are just 2 guys that do an amazing job, and they were so responsive to our request, we added them directly to our support stretchgoal. It works with any 4-button controller setup, so it should be easy enough to get working.

NG:DEV-TEAM is IN!

That’s right, folks, we have a major neo age Neo Geo developers happy to licence their game to our system! Bringing games to an open architecture platform like the Raspberry Pi is risky for developers, as they’re never sure of a return and people may simply pirate their content. That’s why we added the NG:DEV StretchGoal, to cover the licencing fee and make it attractive for them to bring their games to our platform. Practically this means that if enough people join the party, we all get a free game!

SFP GameCards: Proof-of-Concept

I currently have a microSD card with a few cool arcade games, but I’ve rigged it so it autostarts R-Type II with mame4all directly. Seeying as microSD cards are dirtcheap, I can just have a 1-2gb microSD card for each game optimized to work on the SFP without going through emulator menus etc. and put it in a cool case with some neat artwork around it. It’ll have a real old-school HuCard vibe.

It’d be easy and pretty cheap for developers to bring their games to an attractive physical medium at a price competitive to digital only version. As a proof-of-concept this already works, as can be seen in the videos, but this is thinking more long term of course. First thing is to bring the STARFORCE PI into production.
